Tennessee Titans at San Francisco 49ers
With the way that Titan OC Mike Heimerdinger called the offense last week against Jacksonville, it’s pretty apparent that QB Vince Young is exactly the same player we saw as a rookie in 2006. He was running around, throwing short passes to TE Bo Scaife, and every now and then you’d see a wild throw down the field. Tennessee ran the ball 49 times last week, led by Chris Johnson’s huge 228-yard effort in a 30-13 win against Jacksonville. This is exactly what Tennessee hopes to do every week. It was the Titans’ first win of the year, coinciding with Young’s first start of the season. Also, it can’t be overlooked that CB Cortland Finnegan returned and gave a tremendous amount of stability to a beleaguered secondary. Meanwhile, the 49ers weren’t as successful in QB Alex Smith’s first start of the year against the Colts last week. The passing attack was limited with a lack of downfield route combinations and San Francisco fell into too many 2nd-and-long situations with RB Frank Gore unable to generate anything behind his O-line outside of one long run. And you should expect more of the same this week from the anemic 49er offense. In the end, the 49ers aren’t a team that will get away from anyone, which will allow Tennessee to stick with the run all game and hide Young at QB. This one sets up to be a close game – take the Titans and the points.
