San Diego Chargers at New York Giants

The Chargers took down Oakland 24-16 last week, and despite getting over the .500 mark with a 4-3 record, they’ve yet to beat a team with a winning record of its own this season. New York looked invincible through five weeks and has now lost three straight after an embarrassing 40-17 defeat at Philadelphia. Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw hasn’t been himself lately with a cracked foot, and there’s been a long-held theory that bigger RB’s, such as Brandon Jacobs, begin to wear down at a younger age. Jacobs does not look anywhere like the RB he has been in the past and this is putting more pressure on the Giants passing game. However, QB Eli Manning has continued to look uncomfortable in the pocket, and he played too fast last week – possibly still bothered by lingering plantar fasciitis. On the other side, the Chargers defense is playing better than they showed early in the season; after a taking a shellacking from Pittsburgh in Week Four, its regained respectability. And if they can take a cue from Philadelphia, San Diego shouldn’t be too concerned with any of the Giant WR’s being capable of beating them over the top, either. That would allow the Charger defense to play more aggressively, closer to the line of scrimmage. On offense, QB Philip Rivers has thrown against everyone this season and the New York secondary continues to be suspect. Last week, there appeared to be miscommunication between Giants’ S C.C. Brown and CB Corey Webster. That isn’t a good sign for the G-Men who now have to face the San Diego air show this week. Take the Chargers to hang close on the road and the OVER in what should be a high scoring game.
