Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints

Outstanding play at the Superdome has helped Drew Brees and the Saints match the best start in their history. The Panthers certainly haven’t minded playing there, either. The Saints have a chance to go 8-0 for the first time Sunday, but they’ll have to find a way to snap a seven-game home losing streak to a Panthers team that is hitting its stride – winners of 3 of their last 4. Why has Carolina done so well in New Orleans you ask? Panther QB Jake Delhomme, who began his career with New Orleans, is 5-0 with a 104.7 passer rating in road games against the Saints, throwing five TDs with one interception. Delhomme is also coming off an impressive road victory at Arizona last week, where he did not throw an interception for the first time all year. Couple this with a powerful run game and improved offensive line and the Saints could be in for a dog fight on Sunday. The Panthers will look to run the ball and mix in some short passes to WR Steve Smith to keep the chains moving and control the clock. Even though the Carolina defense is playing better, you have to think they want to control the clock and keep Saints QB Drew Brees off the field. And they should be able to do that as the Saints run D was exposed last week against the Falcons who succeeded in keeping the game closer than what people thought. The Panthers will be hard pressed to beat a good Saints team on the road but they will do enough to keep the game within double digits. Take the Panthers and the points.

Refs: Scott Green’s crew will be working the game in New Orleans. Scott’s squad was last in the league for home teams against the spread in 2008 at 33%.
