Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers

The Cowboys went to Philadelphia last week and took down the Eagles 20-16 to claim their fourth straight win and sole possession of first place in the NFC East at 6-2. By contrast, Green Bay traveled to previously winless Tampa Bay last Sunday and fell to the Buccaneers 38-28, to drop to .500 on the season. The
Packers are clearly struggling right now, offensively, defensively, and even on special teams. Green Bay had a punt blocked and returned for a TD last week and gave up an 83-yard return in the kicking game. On defense, the players are struggling with DC Dom Caper’s complex schemes and offensively, Aaron Rodgers is breaking down in the pocket when he doesn’t have to. The Cowboys defense, led by DE Jay Ratliff and LB DeMarcus Ware, has been playing at a much improved level from the beginning of the year and should be able to give the Packer O-line significant problems. Although the Cowboys attempted to be more of a run team this year, they never figured out how to properly use their three talented backs. And the emergence of WR Miles Austin combined with a more controlled QB Tony Romo has shifted the Cowboys back to a more pass-oriented, offensive approach. This matchup leans towards the Cowboys in a shootout.

Refs: Jeff Triplette’s crew will be working the game in Green Bay. Jeff’s team, this year, the home team has scored an average of 4.6 fewer points than Vegas predictions.

Pittsburgh Steelers at Denver Broncos

The Bronco defense plays fast, with great discipline, and reacts immediately. That’s why last week it was such a great move for the Baltimore Ravens to break out the no huddle against them, and you could see the same thing this week with the Steelers offense. It kept the Broncos from being able to switch their multiple personnel packages by not allowing them enough time to get players on and off the field. As a result, and in addition to QB Kyle Orton’s terrible play, Denver fell for the first time this season, 30-7 at the Ravens. Offensively, the Broncos’ struggles could continue this week against another stiff defensive team. RB Knowshon Moreno was unable to generate anything against the Ravens last week, and Pittsburgh is just as strong against the rush. Kyle Orton needs an effective run game to be successful – and this week does not look inviting again for the Denver offense. Meanwhile, the Steelers are fully rested after their bye and have momentum firmly at their back after knocking off the unbeaten Vikings two weeks ago. QB Ben Roethlisberger has been playing consistent/high level football all year as the Steelers have morphed into a spread offense. Look for Steeler WR Hines Ward to be active in the slot for this game, as the Broncos are susceptible in that area. The Broncos struggle with depth at corner, and the Steelers certainly have good enough slot options to exploit the inexperience of Alphonso Smith and Jack Williams in nickel situations, which is what the Ravens did when they had to throw. The Steelers are among the best schemers in the game and they should be able to pull away from the punch-less Broncos in the end.

Refs: Don Carey’s crew will be working the game in Denver. Don’s team is tied for the best road team win percentage in the league at 67%.

Weather: Scattered Showers possible – Precip: 40%, 45°F – Wind Impact: LIGHT, N at 7.0 mph

Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia has completely morphed into a big-play offense with WR DeSean Jackson. If they connect on a long play, then they score. If not, then things get ugly really quickly. But last week against the Giants, Philadelphia connected early and often en route to a key, 40-17 divisional rout. In that game, Eagles QB Donovan McNabb was surprisingly accurate after 2 consecutive duds, but he must continue to play at a high level for the Eagles to have any chance. Also RB Brian Westbrook will return to action after being sidelined last week with a concussion. This should make little difference as backup RB LeSean McCoy will be sharing snaps with him. Meanwhile, Dallas QB Tony Romo has been on fire the last 3 weeks (8 TDs/0 INT), coinciding with the emergence of WR Miles Austin who has set all sorts of team and NFL records during this stretch. The most important part of Austin’s development has been the fantastic rapport he has with Romo, who looks very comfortable throwing him the ball. But the difference in this one will be the 3 headed monster at RB for the Cowboys in Barber, Jones, and Choice. The Cowboys have the weapons to take long sustaining drives that will help keep McNabb out of rhythm as the clock is salted away. And the Cowboys D has been able to get pressure on opposing QB’s lately – a place where the Eagles have struggled. Also look for the Cowboys strong kickoff/punt game to help minimize the damage on special teams. Keep in mind that this is November still for the Cowboys, historically their best month with Romo at QB (12-1). In fact, the Cowboys have won the last 2 November matchups in Philly. It’s not December yet – take the Cowboys to upset the Eagles.

Refs: Walt Coleman’s crew will be working the game in Philadelphia. Walt has a 60% win percentage for the road team this season.

Weather: Clear – Precip: 0%, 59°F – Wind Impact: LIGHT, W at 6.0 mph

Pick: Take Cowboys in an upset

Carolina Panthers at New Orleans Saints

Outstanding play at the Superdome has helped Drew Brees and the Saints match the best start in their history. The Panthers certainly haven’t minded playing there, either. The Saints have a chance to go 8-0 for the first time Sunday, but they’ll have to find a way to snap a seven-game home losing streak to a Panthers team that is hitting its stride – winners of 3 of their last 4. Why has Carolina done so well in New Orleans you ask? Panther QB Jake Delhomme, who began his career with New Orleans, is 5-0 with a 104.7 passer rating in road games against the Saints, throwing five TDs with one interception. Delhomme is also coming off an impressive road victory at Arizona last week, where he did not throw an interception for the first time all year. Couple this with a powerful run game and improved offensive line and the Saints could be in for a dog fight on Sunday. The Panthers will look to run the ball and mix in some short passes to WR Steve Smith to keep the chains moving and control the clock. Even though the Carolina defense is playing better, you have to think they want to control the clock and keep Saints QB Drew Brees off the field. And they should be able to do that as the Saints run D was exposed last week against the Falcons who succeeded in keeping the game closer than what people thought. The Panthers will be hard pressed to beat a good Saints team on the road but they will do enough to keep the game within double digits. Take the Panthers and the points.

Refs: Scott Green’s crew will be working the game in New Orleans. Scott’s squad was last in the league for home teams against the spread in 2008 at 33%.

Weather: Indoors at the Louisiana Superdome

Tennessee Titans at San Francisco 49ers

With the way that Titan OC Mike Heimerdinger called the offense last week against Jacksonville, it’s pretty apparent that QB Vince Young is exactly the same player we saw as a rookie in 2006. He was running around, throwing short passes to TE Bo Scaife, and every now and then you’d see a wild throw down the field. Tennessee ran the ball 49 times last week, led by Chris Johnson’s huge 228-yard effort in a 30-13 win against Jacksonville. This is exactly what Tennessee hopes to do every week. It was the Titans’ first win of the year, coinciding with Young’s first start of the season. Also, it can’t be overlooked that CB Cortland Finnegan returned and gave a tremendous amount of stability to a beleaguered secondary. Meanwhile, the 49ers weren’t as successful in QB Alex Smith’s first start of the year against the Colts last week. The passing attack was limited with a lack of downfield route combinations and San Francisco fell into too many 2nd-and-long situations with RB Frank Gore unable to generate anything behind his O-line outside of one long run. And you should expect more of the same this week from the anemic 49er offense. In the end, the 49ers aren’t a team that will get away from anyone, which will allow Tennessee to stick with the run all game and hide Young at QB. This one sets up to be a close game – take the Titans and the points.

Refs: Carl Cheffers’ crew will be working the game in San Francisco. Cheffers’ team is tied for the best road team win percentage in the league at 67%.

San Diego Chargers at New York Giants

The Chargers took down Oakland 24-16 last week, and despite getting over the .500 mark with a 4-3 record, they’ve yet to beat a team with a winning record of its own this season. New York looked invincible through five weeks and has now lost three straight after an embarrassing 40-17 defeat at Philadelphia. Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw hasn’t been himself lately with a cracked foot, and there’s been a long-held theory that bigger RB’s, such as Brandon Jacobs, begin to wear down at a younger age. Jacobs does not look anywhere like the RB he has been in the past and this is putting more pressure on the Giants passing game. However, QB Eli Manning has continued to look uncomfortable in the pocket, and he played too fast last week – possibly still bothered by lingering plantar fasciitis. On the other side, the Chargers defense is playing better than they showed early in the season; after a taking a shellacking from Pittsburgh in Week Four, its regained respectability. And if they can take a cue from Philadelphia, San Diego shouldn’t be too concerned with any of the Giant WR’s being capable of beating them over the top, either. That would allow the Charger defense to play more aggressively, closer to the line of scrimmage. On offense, QB Philip Rivers has thrown against everyone this season and the New York secondary continues to be suspect. Last week, there appeared to be miscommunication between Giants’ S C.C. Brown and CB Corey Webster. That isn’t a good sign for the G-Men who now have to face the San Diego air show this week. Take the Chargers to hang close on the road and the OVER in what should be a high scoring game.

Washington Redskins at Atlanta Falcons

At 2-5, Washington stands as one of the league’s most disappointing clubs so far this season. There has been far more off-field drama than on-field production, with coach Jim Zorn’s job security being questioned on a daily basis. It remains to be seen if the bye week allowed the team to regroup and solve its offensive issues – especially after losing their best receiver TE Chris Cooley to a season ending injury. On the other side, Atlanta’s late comeback attempt fell short in New Orleans as Atlanta dropped to 4-3, with a 35-27 loss, after starting the year 4-1. The one positive note in the loss for Atlanta is the reemergence of running back Michael Turner who had a huge game last week. Look for Atlanta to go with a run heavy approach again this week with some catches mixed in from TE Tony Gonzalez (scored in 3 straight home games) to keep the Washington defense honest. The Atlanta defense will have a field day with Washington QB Jason Campbell who fumbles the ball with regularity; and this will lead to easy scores for the Falcon offense. Keep in mind that Matt Ryan is 9-1 at home as a starter and he is setup to improve on that total this week facing an offensively challenged Redskins team.
