That doesn’t bode well for a Dallas O-line that’s big and slow, similar to Cincinnati’s. It’s also pretty clear that Dallas was attempting to hide QB Tony Romo, game-planning to manage the game on the ground behind RBs Marion Barber and Felix Jones. As of now, the Cowboys have no offensive rhythm, and WRs Roy Williams and Miles Austin are inconsistent, at best. Add in the fact that Jason Witten is banged up and you have the recipe for a close game.

NY Giants at Denver Broncos
Amazingly, it looks as though the Giants are attempting to convert themselves into a passing offense. New York needed OT to avert a five-game slide and a .500 record last week in getting a 34-31 win over the Falcons. The G-Men are now employing more three-WR sets, and QB Eli Manning has played at a high level in each of his last 2 games. RB Brandon Jacobs is running hard but not breaking tackles the way he used to and RB Ahmad Bradshaw has been ruled out. So look for rookie Giant RB Danny Ware to make a difference down the stretch in this one. Meanwhile, the Broncos are on the same kind of slide that New York had gone down. After starting the season 6-0, Denver was dismantled by San Diego last week, 32-3. The Broncos have been unable to rush the passer, and they’re getting gashed in the run game. That’s not a very good combination. Add to it that QB Kyle Orton is banged up, and he’s not a dominant QB that’s able to lead a team to victory on his own in the first place, and things in Denver look bleak. In the end the difference will be the Giants defensive line as they get after a gimpy Kyle Orton. Take the Giants to cover on the road.

But why do you even need a QB when you have the best RB in the league in Chris Johnson. Due Johnson’s ability and the formations that Tennessee uses, defenses are often in single high coverage, meaning that Titan WRs essentially see man-to-man coverage on the outside, and Young gets very defined throws to make. And he’s succeeded in making good decisions as teams over commit to stop Johnson. On the other side, if QB Matt Schaub can be reached with pressure early, the Titans can take him out of the game. Schaub has looked rattled at times this year when there has been pressure and the Tennessee defense has been playing at a high clip over the last 3 weeks. QB Donovan McNabb is missing some throws, as he did to a wide open TE Brent Celek that should’ve been a score. McNabb isn’t faring well when the field is shortened, and the Eagles don’t have a commitment to their run game. When they get to first-and-goal, their mentality seems to be “perhaps we’ll attempt to run the ball and see if it works.” If not, the run is abandoned. Chicago, meanwhile, gave up just 10 points to San Francisco last week yet still managed to lose, as QB Jay Cutler threw 5 INTs. Right now, this talented QB is playing without discipline, technique, or precision and it’s disappointing. Last week the struggling Chargers run game got healthy against Philly and that trend should continue this week as Chicago can’t afford to let Cutler lose another game. Look for Chicago to rely on RB Matt Forte since Philly struggles to stop the run with the rash of injuries they have suffered at LB. Play the UNDER and take the points in what sets up to be a close low scoring game.

Indianapolis Colts at Baltimore Ravens
The Ravens did just about the minimum in shutting out an inept Cleveland team, 16-0, last Monday to get back above .500. Baltimore kept the ball on the ground, as RB Ray Rice continues to produce in his break out season. In the past, the Colts have struggled against teams that can run the ball effectively. Ray Rice should continue to move the ball on the ground against a poor Indy run D with Joe Flacco mixing in the play action to get big plays down the field. The Baltimore offense has struggled recently, but they will revisit their early season ways in this game as they will have to score some points to win. Although Flacco isn’t playing his best at the moment, look for Baltimore to use multiple personnel and motion to get good WR matchups against the Colt safety coverage the way New England was able to do effectively last Sunday. On defense, look for Baltimore to confuse Manning with different looks and attempt to use pressure. Don’t expect Manning to fall for such tactics, but the Colt O-line isn’t playing that well, and Indianapolis is a one-dimensional team that lacks a run game to stop pressure. Peyton has a tendency to make mistakes against heavy pressure and he will throw some costly picks this week that lead to points for the Ravens. This will be the difference as Baltimore will end the Colts win streak in a high scoring game. Play the Ravens and the OVER.

Atlanta Falcons at NY Giants
Neither of these teams are looking good right now. The Giants have lost four straight games after opening the season 5-0. They’re coming off a bye and really need to get back to the foundation of their offense, which is a power running game behind RB Brandon Jacobs, with RB Ahmad Bradshaw as a change-of-pace back. QB Eli Manning is good within a system, but he shouldn’t be asked to carry the offense. Defensively, the Giants remain solid in their front seven and their secondary is starting to turn around. There’s a chance that CB Aaron Ross will return this week as well, and that’d help out even more. So too, will going up against a Falcon QB in Matt Ryan who’s playing very poorly right now. The sophomore is clearly regressing from his rookie season, and it’s not good to see that a fundamental player’s “fundamentals” are breaking down. Falcon RB Michael Turner suffered a high-ankle sprain last week and will not play this week. This is a huge loss as he has been the only one making plays on offense. Things are setup for the Giants to get back to their winning ways this week as they look to make a push for the playoffs. Take the Giants to cover the spread.

Cleveland Browns at Detroit Lions
The 1-win Lions hung around with the 1-loss Vikings last weekend before Minnesota ultimately pulled away with the 27-10 win. QB Matthew Stafford played his best game since getting hurt in Week Four, and after winning just 2 of their last 33 games, the Lions actually have a very winnable matchup on their hands this Sunday. The Browns just got shutout by Baltimore last Monday, 16-0, and are averaging just 3 points per game over their last 3 games. Cleveland switched back to QB Brady Quinn as its starter, and neither he nor former starting QB Derek Anderson has reached even 100 yards passing in any of the past three weeks. The Browns ineptness on offense (dead last in the league, YPG) is matched only by their ineptness on defense (dead last in the league, YPG). But the defense at least has been attempting some things schematically that have looked a little better in the past few weeks. Still, they lack talent and Lion WR Calvin Johnson is a special enough talent to make things happen no matter the matchup. Take the Lions to cover and get their second win of the season.

San Diego Chargers at Denver Broncos
Amazingly, after the Chargers fell to 2-3 when the Broncos beat them 34-23 back on October 19, San Diego can now take sole possession of first place in the AFC West with a victory here. It’s questionable whether or not Bronco QB Kyle Orton will be able to go in this one after he injured his ankle in the second quarter of last week’s game at Washington. Not coincidentally, the Redskins scored 13 unanswered points in the second half to defeat the Broncos, while backup QB Chris Simms looked awful. Denver’s defense hasn’t been able to produce lately and, simultaneously, the Charger D has improved a good deal in recent weeks. Also Charger RB LaDainian Tomlinson had his best performance of the season last week against Philadelphia and QB Philip Rivers and WR Vincent Jackson continue to be one of the most dangerous passing tandems in all of the NFL. These are two teams going in opposite directions and the Chargers should get some revenge for their early season loss to Denver. Take San Diego to cover the line.
